This is the third week into our journey into Disney’s Animal Kingdom in honor of Earth Day and the park’s 24th anniversary. Of all of the amazing things this park can boast of, one of the more unique aspects is the animals that you can see in their incredible habitats.

Disney has mastered what it means to give families a truly magical experience. You become immersed in the parks, feeling as if you are in a perfect universe, matching the theming of each park. With Animal Kingdom- it’s showcased theme is in the name. What it’s all about is the animals! 

Today we’ll discuss just a few of the numerous ways to see the animals in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom Live Shows

 Feathered Friends in Flight (formerly UP Great Bird Adventure) is located in Asia. This 35 minute show takes you for a behind-the-scenes look at the birds of Animal Kingdom. Their animal behavior specialists show how they train and care for their feathered friends. We love this choice because of  the amount of amazing things you’ll learn while seeing these gorgeous creatures.

Winged Encounters is another bird show, located by the Tree of Life. This show ranged from 5-10 minutes, and focuses on macaws and the conservation of them. As they free-fly around you, a magical avian expert will share information and fun facts about them. We love this choice because it is so neat to have the birds fly around you as you learn about the macaws.

Gorilla Falls Walking Trail

Animal Kingdom Walking Tours

 Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is located in Africa. On this self-guided tour, you will learn more about Disney’s global conservation efforts to protect the animals that you visit here. These animals include meercats, Grevy’s zebras, and lowland gorillas. You get to come face-to-face with these magnificent creatures as you make your way through the Pagani forest at your own pace. Be sure to snap some photos of the picturesque habitats!

 Maharaja Jungle Trek is located in Asia. This trail is described as a trek through a mystical forest. As you cross footbridges, and go through winding trails of this lush, tropical paradise, you can encounter some wonderful wildlife. This includes:

  • Asian Tigers
  • Gibbons
  • Elds deer
  • Blackbuck
  • Komodo dragon
  • Malayan flying fox
  • Water buffalo
  • Over 50 species of birds
Animal Kingdom Gorilla

Enchanting Extras

In the Caring for Giants tour, you will get a glimpse into the world of the Disney elephants. For $35, this 60 minute tour will take you about 80 feet away from the enormous creatures. Disney boasts that you will be able to gain insight to this herd of African elephants. Your guide will tell you about the inner-workings of the day-to-day care for the creatures, and about Disney’s conservation efforts. 

Up Close with Rhinos does exactly what the name suggests- getting you up close with the white rhinoceros! For $45, your guide will take you to meet these massive creatures- second largest land mammals in the world. This 60 minute excursion walks you through the rhino’s biology, behavior, and insights into the species. The rhino-keeper will also discuss the rhino’s challenges in the wild that threaten their population. We love this extra. After all, who else can say they’ve been that close to a real rhino?


Animals Animal Kingdom

Kilamanjaro Safaris

This ride, located in Africa, takes you on an open-air vehicle through the African savanna. The vehicle is driven by your own expert guide, who will take you through Harambe’s Wildlife Reserve, spanning 110 acres. On this 18 minute expedition, you may be able to see hippos, lions, and baboons. You may also encounter zebras, crocodiles, rhinos, hyenas and so much more! This is a great option for those seeking a variety of animals. This ride used to only be available during daylight hours, however you can now experience this journey at nigh. Some of the more nocturnal residents will be more active, making for an unforgettable experience!  


Animal Kingdom VIP Tour

Splurge for an Exhilarating Safari Adventure!

Reserve your spot for the Wild Africa Trek, located in Africa. This privately-guided expedition, is $199 per person. This 3 hour tour, takes you across a rope-bridge, riding in a safari vehicle, and walking through trails. You’ll get to encounter animals such as giraffes, rhinos and crocodiles. Your tour guide will answer any questions you may have, and give you details about the animals you see, as well as Disney’s animal conservation. This tour includes a complimentary souvenir, and complimentary photo services, to capture the magical moments on your tour. 

Once you complete your adventure and have worked up an appetite, indulge in the gourmet food they offer, such as:

  • Chicken curry salad
  • Sun-dried tomato hummus and mini pita
  • Marinated tandoori shrimp
  • Smoked salmon roulade with dill
  • Air-dried beef and prosciutto
